Festival Živa spodbuja plesanje in gledanje plesa.
Festival of young dance creativity ŽIVA is an annual event which presents a cross-section of current activites of the selected dance groups and individuals from all over Slovenia as well as guests from abroad. Its name ŽIVA is a unique homage to Živa Kraigher, an important Slovenian dance teacher and choreographer.
In his A Choreographer’s Handbook, Jonathan Burrows writes that most of us rather dance than watch other people dance. He also states that “I like to move” is not a good enough reason to ask others to watch you do just that. The Živa festival wants to encourage dancing and watching dance. This is why we will start this year’s event with a lecture performance entitled “How we Watch Dance”. It is true that we can understand and experience dance easier if we are dancers ourselves. But without watching, reading and thinking about it, our development will quickly stop. Should we want more, however, dance as an art form is like an open field that allows exploring the body and its movement. The dance body or the body of contemporary dance was labelled an autonomous body by Bojana Kunst, who also states that it “continuously plays a game of changes, travelling between meaning and realisation, between reality and manifestation, between presence and disappearance, between the subject and object, and thus prevents us from encapsulating it with a single act, system, stile, form or word.”
The dance miniatures programme will confirm that contemporary dance creativity of the young cannot be summed up by a unified labelling scheme, but its main aim is, apart from presenting academic dance programmes, to act as a facilitator for exploring the living and spacious landscapes of contemporary dance art.
